Power outage hits northern Montgomery County

At about 9:30 p.m. tonight, about 50 Dayton Power & Light customers were still without power after an outage occurred in the Huber Heights area of northern Montgomery County along the border with Miami County.

"We're hoping to get everybody back before midnight," said Kevin Hall, DP&L director of operations. "It looks like it's related to an underground cable."

About 100 customers lost power about 5 p.m. in an area north of Interstate 70, south of U.S. 40 and east of Ohio 202,  Hall said.

A resident on Gardengate Drive told News Center 7 at about 8:20 p.m. that power at her home went out "right at 5 o'clock."

Flames destroy car on I-75 South

A man who had just returned from a trip received a rude homecoming Friday night when his Volkswagen caught fire and burned up on Interstate 75 South near the Grand Avenue exit.

The man, who wasn’t available for an interview, told Dayton fire crews his gas tank was pretty well full, said Firefighter Mike Rice of Engine 8.

“He just picked it up from the airport. He just got back from a trip,” Rice said the man told fire crews, who were dispatched to the area just after 7 p.m. on a report of a car fire.

The driver managed to pull the car off to the right berm of the interstate, which allowed fire crews to keep all but the right lane of traffic open.

The cause wasn’t determined, said Rice, who explained that the man told them that the fire started in the rear of the car, but the flames “pretty much engulfed the whole vehicle.”

Man, 78, reported missing in Kettering

A 78-year-old Kettering man has been missing since Friday afternoon, police said.

Doai Pham was last seen by family members at about 12:30 p.m. Friday, said police. He left his home for unknown reasons in a tan 2001 Toyota Camry bearing Ohio license tag CRS-5397.

Pham’s family has not had any communication with him since this afternoon. Pham, who is on daily medications, has dementia and might be confused, according to police. He was last seen wearing a black leather jacket and blue jeans.
